The 2016 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) will take place next week, February 22-25, at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. Starting Monday, HIVandHepatitis.com and our partners at Aidsmap will provide on-site coverage of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), new HIV treatments, and more.

CROI is the major U.S. annual HIV scientific conference, which also includes associated conditions such as viral hepatitis and tuberculosis. Many researchers worldwide choose it as a venue to present their latest work.

Topics to be covered this year include biomedical HIV prevention, novel PrEP options, new antiretroviral drugs and treatment strategies, the HIV care continuum, HIV cure research, complications of HIV and its treatment, and the global epidemiology of HIV and hepatitis C in various affected populations.

Plenary session will discuss the future of antiretroviral therapy, transgender health and HIV, and an update on recent HIV and hepatitis C outbreaks in rural Indiana. Cascade of care studies are expected to show increased viral suppression among people receiving HIV care in the U.S. and a shrinking gap in life expectancy for people living with HIV. Regarding HIV-associated complications, several reports will look at bone loss and how to prevent it.

On the HIV prevention front, researchers will present data from a pair of Phase 3 trials testing a vaginal ring containing the NNRTI dapivirine. Other reports will provide monkey and early human data on the long-acting injectable cabotegravir and the new "TAF" version of tenofovir for PrEP. Another session will explore kidney function and STIs among people taking Truvada for PrEP. HIV cure research will include studies of anti-PD-L1 and a combination of a therapeutic vaccine and romidepsin.

Starting next Monday HIVandHepatitis.com will bring you live updates via Twitter (@HIVandHepatitis), with in-depth coverage on our website starting later in the week. The full CROI 2016 program-at-a-glance is now available on the conference website, and abstracts and selected presentations from the meeting will be posted at http://www.croiconference.org as content is released from embargo.
