National Latino AIDS Awareness Day(NLAAD), recognized annually on October 15, is opportunity to raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic among Latino and Hispanic people in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while Latinos/Hispanics make up approximately 16% of the total U.S. population, they accounted for 20% of all new HIV infections in 2009.
A majority (81%) of new HIV infections among Latino men occur among men have sex with men (MSM), with 45% of those occurring among young gay and bisexual men under age 30. Latina women have an HIV infection rate about 4 times higher than that of U.S. white women (11.8 vs 2.6 per 100,000 persons). Injection drug use continues to be a major HIV risk factor for Latinos, especially those living in Puerto Rico.
