February 7 is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

February 7 is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), an opportunity to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS among African Americans -- the group that bears the greatest burden of the epidemic in the U.S. The theme for the 14th annual observance is "I Am My Brother’s and Sister’s Keeper."

"All African Americans deserve lifesaving HIV prevention, testing, care, and treatment services," said Jonathan Mermin, director of the CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention.

FDA Approves Oral Raltegravir for Children with HIV

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month approved a new dosage form of the HIV integrase inhibitor raltegravir (Isentress). The new raltegravir oral suspension is indicated for pediatric patients age 4 weeks or older weighing 3-20 kg (about 7-44 lb).

Protein in Breast Milk May Help Prevent Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission

A natural protein in human breast milk, known as tenascin-C, blocks HIV entry by binding to the viral envelope and preventing it from attaching to host cell co-receptors, possibly helping explain the low rate of mother-to-child HIV infection via breast-feeding, according to research published in the October 21, 2013, advance edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

UNAIDS Releases Supplemental Report on HIV and Aging Worldwide

UNAIDS this week published a special supplement to its recent UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic focused on aging of the population with HIV/AIDS. According to the report, more than 10% of people living HIV in low- and middle-income countries are age 50 or older. In some areas with early epidemics and earlier access to effective treatment, such as San Francisco, this percentage already exceeds 50%.

October 15 is National Latino AIDS Awareness Day

National Latino AIDS Awareness Day(NLAAD), recognized annually on October 15, is opportunity to raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic among Latino and Hispanic people in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while Latinos/Hispanics make up approximately 16% of the total U.S. population, they accounted for 20% of all new HIV infections in 2009.
