Presentations at a session on HIV prevention strategies for sex workers, which took place at the 20th International AIDS Conference last month in Melbourne, showed that while consistent condom use is generally high among female sex workers, other barriers remain to effective prevention of HIV transmission and to care for those who are HIV positive.

The World Health Organization (WHO) issued new guidelines for key populations affected by HIV/AIDS prior to the 20th International AIDS Conference held last week in Melbourne, Australia. The first results from the IPERGAY study, a trial of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in gay men taking place in France and Quebec, Canada, appear to indicate excellent adherence to a novel "pre-and-post" intermittent PrEP strategy designed to save money and reduce time spent taking PrEP unnecessarily.
