In 2008 Nick Rhoades was convicted of "Criminal Transmission of HIV" in Iowa, even though his viral load was undetectable, he used a condom, and his accuser did not contract HIV. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with tenofovir or Truvada can dramatically lower the risk of HIV sexual transmission for heterosexual men and women -- as has previously been shown for gay men -- but good adherence is crucial to its success, according to a trio of studies published in the July 11, 2012, advance online edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
